Why Mothers?

A young man questioned while
Conversing with others,
“Why oh why, God, did you
Have to make, Mothers?

Mom made sure at bedtime
My teeth were all brushed,
She saw to the dentist and
Vaccines I rushed.

Reminding me of my
Thank-you’s and pleases,
To excuse myself after
All of my sneezes.

My childhood would have
Been so much more fun,
If only, Lord, you hadn’t
Invented my Mom.

Moms make you eat spinach
So you’re healthy and sound,
Setting curfew for midnight
So you can’t roam the town.

They often in a loud voice,
Their opinions relate,
Telling you bluntly who you
Should or shouldn’t date.
Pressuring you to save
All of your wages,
You’d think they’d kept counsel
With some of life’s sages.

My teen years would have
Been so much more fun,
If only, Lord, you hadn’t
Invented my Mom.”

“Son, I needed someone to
comfort you at night,
Wipe noses and make sure
your homework was right.

To tell stories at bedtime
And tuck you in tight,
To see that your clothing was
Kept clean and bright.

Had a special job that
I wished to be done,
I needed someone to love
And to raise you, my son.

I couldn’t just leave it
To chance or another,
So that is why…
I created your Mother.
